What is OurTownSD?

A search engine for residents and visitors,
and a promotional tool for San Diego LGBTQ+
service agencies, arts and athletic groups
to recruit and connect with clients, donors and/or volunteers

OurTownSD Connects:
THOSE IN NEED OF VITAL SERVICES to SD & major national providers
DONORS to well-deserving SD LGBTQ+ charities & their fundraising events
VOLUNTEERS to hundreds of groups and a calendar of annual events
THOSE WISHING TO BE ENTERTAINED to photos & a calendar of annual events
ATHLETES to a wide range of athletic groups

Origins:

There are now 3 OurTown nonprofits. All are managed by unpaid volunteers.

In 2001 Walgreen's at 18th & Castro in San Francisco began to offer free advertising space in their window to volunteers to schedule multiple weeks to nonprofits to promote their mission, recruit volunteers and advertise upcoming events. Paul Margolis took over responsibility for scheduling in 2011. Since these windows face busy city streets, soon there was a long wait list for the Windows.

OurTownSF.org was created by Paul Margolis in October 2013 to fill the need to connect our community and their service providers. Information listed was submitted by groups or copied from their website and/or Facebook pages where it was categorized and made easy to find. The website has been replaced by a Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ourtownsf which includes a Google document listing groups serving San Francisco. It, along with the Nonprofit Window at Walgreens, are now handled by Gary Poe.

OurTownLA.org was created in 2015 by David H. and is a vital part of LA's LGBTQ+ community with listings and photos much like ourtownsd.org plus it includes an events calendar

OurTownSD.org was created in 2024 by Paul Margolis when he relocated to San Diego.

Funding:

OurTownSD is fully funded by its founder with a stipend from POZabilities. Donations are welcome at www.pozabilities/donate

Orígenes:

Actualmente hay 3 organizaciones sin fines de lucro OurTown. Todas son gestionadas por voluntarios no remunerados.
